Netflix India Gifts 17 New Originals to its Viewers7 min read

Finally some good news in 2020! 

Curiosity struck everyone when on the 16th of July, Instagram was full of stories from some of our favourite stars asking Netflix to “spill the beans”. Netflix did reveal the secret the following day and what a delightful surprise has it been. 

Over the course of the next few months, Netflix will release seventeen originals consisting of five series and twelve movies. Needless to say, cinephiles all over are excited to the brim, all eager to watch what this OTT platform has to offer.

Here is a sneak peek to this eclectic and fun platter of content that has been served to us by the creators of some of our favorite web shows.


1. Mismatched

Director: Akash Khurana

Cast: Prajakta Kohli and Rohit Saraf

Date of Release: Not available

Mismatched stars one of the biggest sensations on YouTube, Prajakta Kohli (Mostly Sane) with Rohit Saraf from The Sky Is Blue. It is said to be a young-adult romance with all its ups and downs. With “Little Things”(Friyay Ratings-4/5) already having worked wonders for Netflix, we cannot wait to watch this.

2. A Suitable Boy

Director: Mira Nair

Cast: Tabu, Ishaan Khatter, Tanya Maniktala

Date of Release: 26th July, 2020

This is for all the bibliophiles out there. Vikram Seth’s classic, is being adapted into a series by none other than Mira Nair. With Tabu at its helm we can expect nothing short of magic (Remember, The Namesake?). It also stars Dhadak star Ishaan Khatter and the teaser looks dreamy to say the least. 3. Bombay Begums

Director: Alankrita Shrivastava and Bornila Chatterjee

Cast: Pooja Bhatt, Shahana Goswami and Amruta Shubhash

Date of Release: Not available

Bombay Begums is set in the current urban India where five women panning different generations and dreams battle with their own wishes, personal ethics and dilemmas to achieve their goals and ultimately discover themselves. It also stars Pooja Bhatt among other exceptional performers.

4. Bhaag Beanie Bhaag

Director: Debbie Rao, Abi Verghese and Ishaan Nair

Cast: Swara Bhaskar and Varun Thakur

Date of Release: Not available

Swara Bhaskar will be playing the role of Beanie who wishes to pursue a career in stand-up comedy after leaving her well-settled life in this.

Bhaag Beanie Bhaag is basically about what Beanie does in order to realize her lifelong dream of becoming a stand-up artiste.

The official synopsis of the show reads, “Beanie has always done what’s asked of her — until she decides to run from her very comfortable life and pursue a career in stand-up comedy. As she navigates the demands of everyone from her concerned parents to her proposal-popping boyfriend, this is Beanie’s journey to carve out the life she wants for herself amidst the chaos.”

5. Masaba Masaba

Director: Sonam Nair

Cast: Neena Gupta and Masaba

Date of Release: Not available

Taking inspiration from their real-life moments, this show stars Neena Gupta and Masaba playing themselves. It is a show reflecting on Masaba’s career, family and the unique background she comes from.


1. Ludo

Director: Anurag Basu

Cast: Abhishek Bachchan, Rajkummar Rao, Aditya Roy Kapur, Sanya Malhotra, Fatima Sana Shaikh, Asha Negi and Pankaj Tripathi

Date of Release: Not available

This has the most interesting cast from this lot. Abhishek Bachchan makes his second foray to OTT after Breathe into the Shadows (Friyay Rating: 3/5). This dark comedy also features Rajkummar Rao, Aditya Roy Kapur, Sanya Malhotra, Fatima Sana Shaikh, Asha Negi and Pankaj Tripathi. It is based on the theme that nothing is ever a coincidence.

2. Torbaaz

Director: Girish Malik

Cast: Sanjay Dutt and Nargis Fakhri

Date of Release: Not available

Torbaaz, an action-packed film, starring Sanjay Dutt and Nargis Fakhri in the lead roles, uses the game of cricket as a medium to help transform the lives of children at a refugee camp. According to Dutt, it highlights his character’s rise from personal tragedy as well.

3. Raat Akeli Hai

Director: Honey Trehan

Cast:  Radhika Apte and Nawazuddin Siddiqui

Date of Release: 31st July, 2020

Netflix puts its best foot forward when it comes to its favourite actors Radhika Apte and Nawazuddin Siddiqui. It is a mystery thriller where Siddiqui tries to unravel what happened one fateful night.

4. Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitaare

Director: Alankrita Shrivastava

Cast: Konkona Sen Sharma and Bhumi Pednekar

It is a satire film by Alankrita Shrivastava, of Death in the Gunj fame. With Konkona Sen Sharma and Bhumi Pednekar in lead roles along with Vikrant Massey and Amol Parashar it is a charming story of womanhood, friendship, sisterhood, and everything in between.

5. Ginny weds Sunny

Director: Puneet Khanna

Cast: Yami Gautam and Vikrant Massey

Date of Release: Not available

After Indian Matchmaking, Netflix takes another plunge into the matchmaking business with Ginny Weds Sunny, a rom-com that follows the unique love story of Yami Gautam and Vikrant Massey. Yami’s mother helps perpetuate the relationship, but we have to wait to know the twist in this tale.

6. Bombay Rose

Director: Gitanjali Rao

Date of Release: 12th August, 2020

This animated movie has a highly successful run in the international movie festival circuit. It narrates the story of a flower seller’s love story in true Bollywood style.

7. Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl

Director: Sharan Sharma

Cast:  Jahnvi Kapoor, Pankaj Tripathi, Angad Bedi, Manav Vij and Viineet Kumar Singh.

Date of Release: 12th August, 2020

It is a biopic produced by Dharma Productions and Zee Studios. It is based on the life of Gunjan Saxena who was the first Indian woman to pilot a Cheetah Helicopter during the 1999 Kargil war. With Jahnvi Kapoor in the lead role, it also features Pankaj Tripathi, Angad Bedi, Manav Vij and Viineet Kumar Singh.

8. Tribhanga: Tedhi Meri Crazy

Director: Renuka Shahane

Cast: Kajol, Tanvi Azmi and Mithila Palkar

Date of Release: Not available

Tribhanga takes its name from a dance pose in Odissi which is asymmetrical, yet mesmerising to watch, much like what the film promises to be. It stars Kajol, Tanvi Azmi and OTT’s sweetheart Mithila Palkar in the lead roles, portraying the hectic lives of Nayan, Anu and Masha. 

9. Kaali Khuhi

Director: Terrie Samundra

Cast: Shabana Azmi, Satyadeep Mishra, Sanjeeda Sheikh and Riva Arora

Date of Release: Not available

In this movie, 10 year old Shivangi embarks on a mission to save her ancestral village in Punjab from the restless ghosts of its horrific past. It has a promising star cast of Shabana Azmi, Satyadeep Mishra, Sanjeeda Sheikh and Riva Arora.

10. Serious Men

 Director: Sudhir Mishra

Cast: Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Nasser, Shweta Basu Prasad

Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s character is  exhausted with his ‘under-privileged’ societal status and hatches a master plan to earn some money, only for it to backfire terribly.

11. Class of 83

Director: Atul Sabharwal

Cast: Bobby Deol, Bhupendra Jadawat, Hitesh Malukani and Anoop Soni

Date of Release: Not available

Bobby Deol makes a comeback through this production of Shahrukh Khan’s Red Chillies Entertainment. It is based on the book “The Class of 83” by Sayyed Yunus Hussain Zaidi. Deol plays Dean Vijay Singh, a cop-turned-educator whose students grapple with the complexities of being in the force and devotion to the nation.

12. AK vs AK

Director: Vikramaditya Motwane

Cast: Anurag Kashyap and Anil Kapoor

Date of Release: Not available

This is a crazy dark comedy featuring Anurag Kashyap and Anil Kapoor in the lead roles. It is an eccentric tale of how a director (Kashyap) kidnaps the daughter of a movie star and films the star’s (Kapoor) desperate search for his daughter in real-time as his next blockbuster.
