Since its friendship’s day, it is mandatory to share. This timeshare screen with these recommendations. It’s typically romantic films that capture the spotlight when it comes to relationships, but there’s something different about movies celebrating friends.

How often does it happen that you tell your friend that they hold a special place in your heart? Well generally never! We think of our friend as a talk buddy, hangout buddy, beer buddy, tears buddy, Goa buddy (if you know what I mean), and game buddy.

But now Friyay is curious to know if you have any screen buddy. Trends are changing across the world so why are you limiting your binging to yourself, why not to include your friends and make it more interesting. On the occasion of friendship day ask your friend if he is interested in becoming your movie buddy.

The concept of friendship is not fixed. It is a bond between people, that could be formed due to various reasons or at times even the lack of one. We know that all of us are under lock-down and we may not be able to celebrate this 2nd of August with our besties, but why not hold a watch party and binge through some of the best series and movies on friendship. Here are some of our favourites that will make you want to run and hug your friends.

1. The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012)

Director: Stephen Chbosky

Cast:  Logan LermanEmma WatsonEzra Miller

Currently streaming on Amazon Prime Videos

Friyay’s Take: Leave everything and watch this.

IMDb: 8.0

Directed by the author of the book by the same name, it is indeed one of the best books to movie adaptations. It stars Logan Lerman (from the Percy Jackson series), Emma Watson (from the Harry Potter Series), and Ezra Miller(We need to talk about Kevin). This is a movie about a lot of things- a coming of age story, one about mental health, a story about friendship and messed up teenage relationships, a story about social outcasts who have no intentions of fitting in – and yet it is more than all of that.
We have all been through the wallflower phase, trying to fit in and it is through our friends that we have overcome it. Great acting, an intriguing and immersive storyline, and David Bowie- how could one not feel “infinite” after watching this!

2. Hidden Figures (2016)

Director: Theodore Melfi

Cast:  Taraji P. HensonOctavia SpencerJanelle Monáe

Currently streaming on Netflix

Friyay’s Take: Leave everything and watch this.

IMDb: 7.8

Hidden Figures goes deeper than simply telling a tale about how three black women conquer countless barriers to achieve their dreams — it describes a profound and loving bond between women who find ways to lift each other up in the face of adversity. Starring Taraji P. Henson from The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Octavia Spencer from The Shape of Water and Janelle Monae from Moonlight, the movie is about how friends can change the world together. They lean on each other’s shoulders, cry, laugh, cherish, and support each other. This is those movies which all you Boss Ladies can sit together and make a day out of it.

3. Frances Ha (2012)

Director: Noah Baumbach

Cast: Greta GerwigMickey SumnerAdam Driver

Currently streaming on Amazon Prime Videos

Friyay’s Take: Leave everything and watch this.

IMDb: 7.5

“Frances Ha” is a quiet story about a complicated female friendship. It completely understands the sisterly support and emotional bonds those deep friendships can engender. Also the competitiveness, the judging, the envy. A nice, light yet thoughtful watch celebrating friendship.

4. Dumb and Dumber (1994)

Creators:   Peter FarrellyBobby Farrelly

Cast:  Jim CarreyJeff DanielsLauren Holly

Currently streaming on Amazon Prime Videos

Friyay’s Take: Add this to your watchlist

IMDb: 7.3

Harry and Loyd’s friendship is iconic. We would all love to go for some amazing adventures with our friends and end up doing silly things just because friendship and being silly go hand in hand. Watch this with your friends and relive those adventures.

5. The Shawshank Redemption (1994)

Director:  Frank Darabont

Cast: Tim RobbinsMorgan Freeman

Currently streaming on Amazon Prime Videos

Friyay’s Take: Leave everything and watch this.

IMDb: 9.3

Shawshank Redemption is the tale of a friendship that unfolds over a period of thirty years. This is the tale of a person’s worth and ability, and how someone can find the courage to continue working through tough times. During the 1940s America, Andy(Tim Robbins from Mystic River) and Red (Morgan Freeman from Million Dollar Baby) possibly would never have become friends outside prison walls. Nevertheless, prison levels the playing field by robbing them of their freedom, autonomy, integrity and human rights in general. Andy and Red find light in each other gradually after being pushed into a cramped space that causes fear, distrust and violence. You may not relate to being falsely imprisoned or spending decades in prison. But the emotional value that friendship brings during despair is a universal theme.

6. E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (1982)

Director:  Steven Spielberg

Cast: Henry ThomasDrew Barrymore,& Peter Coyote

Currently streaming on Amazon Prime Videos

Friyay’s Take: Leave everything and watch this.

IMDb: 7.8

At its bright red heart, E.T. is a movie about friendship. Elliott and E.T. form a closely-knit pair with vastly different backgrounds, and their relationship is rooted in affection, commitment, compassion, cooperation and even a mystical cosmic relationship. Yet, the camaraderie does not end there. Also significant is the relationship between Elliott and Michael: Michael begins the film as the main persecutor of Elliott but he becomes his primary protector by the end. Even Michael’s goofy friends step up and lend a hand when necessary. Those kids show a rebellious, almost punk rock “us against the world” sensibility when it comes to all things E.T.

7. Thelma & Louise (1991)

Director:  Ridley Scott

Cast: Susan SarandonGeena Davis

Currently streaming on Amazon Prime Videos

Friyay’s Take: Add this to your watchlist

IMDb: 7.5

Thelma (Geena Davis – from Stuart Little) & Louise (Susan Sarandon- from The Client) are drastically different from one another but they are still the best of friends. They agree to pursue a short trip to take a break from their boring lives. What happens on the trip takes them to a completely different direction. They mess up several times but Louise, being the powerful one, takes it upon herself to defend them both. The depth of their relationship is constantly tested but they stand by each other through it all.

8. The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas (2006)

Director: Mark Herman

CastAsa ButterfieldDavid Thewlis & Rupert Friend

Currently streaming on Amazon Prime Videos

Friyay’s Take: Leave everything and watch this.

IMDb: 7.8

In The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, when Bruno (Asa Butterfield who plays Otis in Netflix’s Sex Education) is forced to leave Berlin, one of his main complaints is that he must also leave his three best friends. To make matters worse, there are no other families or children around him when he gets to the new house in Auschwitz. Nonetheless, when he meets Shmuel, a kid on the other side of the fence, it is the beginning of a beautiful-albeit short-lived-friendship. They have a lot of differences, yet, these two form a bond that transcends race, and even fences. In a world governed by hatred, Bruno and Shmuel show that friendship can thrive even in the darkest of places.

9. Toy Story (1995)

Director:  John Lasseter

Cast: Tom HanksTim AllenDon Rickles

Currently streaming on Amazon Prime Videos

Friyay’s Take: Leave everything and watch this.

IMDb: 8.3

“You’ve Got a Friend in Me.”

This song underscores all the friendships in the entire series. Be it between Woody and his owner Andy or between Woody and Buzz or even the many other misfit toys that found kinship with each other. Take a trip of friendship from childhood to adulthood by binge-watching all the movies in this series.

10. The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants (2005)

Director:  Ken Kwapis

Friyay’s Take: Leave everything and watch this.

IMDb: 6.5

Four inseparable and wildly different friends don’t spend the first summer together since childhood, however they find a pair of Jeans which magically fits them all.
